About India Gate
India Gate is situated at the heart of India’s capital Delhi. It is a memorial monument in the memory of war heroes built by British India. The memorial bears the names of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in the Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of World War I in 1919. The India Gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. It was dedicated to the nation in 1931 by the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin. After India independence another memorial, Amar Jawan Jyoti was added to remind the nation of soldiers who laid down their lives in the Indo-Pakistan War of December 1971. The eternal flame burns day and night under the arch in remembrance of Indian soldiers.
India Gate is a popular picnic spot with a large expanse of lush green lawns and fountains nearby make a lovely display with colorful lights.
During past few years we have seen a number of protests at India Gate. People gather there for a cause, as it gives them an inspiration and wakes patriotism in them.
